People's dreams never die! there's usually something to believe in, to have trust on.
We can be guillable embracing things that could turn out not to be real, though. The longing of trust blocks the capacity of rational thinking and we are then exposed to hurt.

If dishonesty was an art, the person next to you could turn out to be Van Gohg and you might not even realize. At first it will not matter, you will be amazed by those pictures and his craft. But then, some day, it could be painted with your blood.

There will always be those who are gullible, because a life of trust is preferable to a life of constant suspicion. And, in our culture, we love liars. We love them because we want to think the best about people, but we also love them because they flatter us, and because we prefer fantasy to reality, we actually don't wanna see that reality. We want to believe the unbelievable. And we bow down and worship these people who fulfill this unreality we seek. We avoid the hard questions that would point to who these people really are.
