90% of good "character" writing is about the presentation of the dialog and visual description of characters. Imagine if somebody wrote Lord of the Rings exactly the same except that throughout the entire book there wasn't a single physical description of anybody. Only descriptions of behaviors. That means you don't know what the characters look like. You don't know what each race looks like. All you know are the names of the characters and the names of the kingdoms/races etc and nothing else, and the entire plot is driven only by character behaviors and interactions.
Do you know what the response would have been?
It would have been panned for not being "interesting" enough. For having "bland and boring" characters and factions.
Literally everything about the manner in which the reader reacts to characters and factions is determined by visual descriptions, because that is what they use to envision the world/setting. Without them, all you are left with are the actual behaviors of characters themselves, which alone by itself tends to not be very interesting. Who cares who Gandalf is if all you know about him is that he is an old wizard and nothing else? Who cares about the Orcs, the Elfs etc if you know nothing about them except that the former live in a volcano and the later in the forest?
Without visuals and gimmicky dialog that create "character", most novels would be super boring.
Looks theory holds true even in written fiction.
