People work and invent stuff so they can easier fulfill their basic needs (e.g. food and reproduction) so they can then go and better work and invent stuff. It's an infinite recursion with the mindless goal of consuming all useable energy in the universe. Pretty terrifying when you really think about what actually motivates us.
