It isn't being tortured, killed, raped etc.
The most frightening thing that could possibly happen to a person is knowing secrets that Man is not supposed to know about.
The reason it is the most frightening thing that could possibly happen, is because of how enticing it is as an idea. Knowledge accumulation is the most addictive thing ever to befall mankind and why God was so against Adam and Eve eating the apple.
Only stupid people complain about the garden of Eden story; 'Umm why would god keep human beings in the dark, that's so evil'
It's not evil in the slightest. It was protection. Knowing everything is an incredibly frightening concept and anyone who has taken psychedelics will agree with you on this. There is a limit, different to each person based on IQ, idea mapping ability (meaning the ability to put new information into perspective and compile it with everything else), and open mindedness.
Open mindedness is both a curse and a gift. If your natural inclination is to jump headfirst into a new idea out of curiosity, instead of backing away out of fear, then you are at greater risk of insanity via too much information.
I personally will never fully recover at what happened to me during my hallucenogenic drug experiences, I don't think. The ideas beamed into my big brain almost reached a critical breaking point. Only faith in Jesus Christ saved me from lunacy.
The naivety of the knowledge-accumulator will eventually bite them in the ass. They will eventually step into shoes way too big for themselves and not be able to deal with it. You have a very, very long time on this planet. Don't ruin the rest of it by acquiring too much information early on.
The idea that I will acquire decades and decades of more information than I already possess is so frightening to me, though the one consolation is that even though I know quite a bit about a lot, in the grand scheme of things I know absolutely fuck all. I know that I know nothing.
