Finally I found a photo of her after all these years. This is Aicui.

This girl was one of the most peculiar I've ever dated. Out of all the girls I've had anything to do with there's only her and another one, from Vietnam, that I've thought about from time to time.

The year was 2014 and I had recently moved to Beijing to start training at a new company I'd signed a contract with. The recruiter lady who got me the job let me stay with her parents in their apartment out in Chaoyang for the month until my training would be finished. The headquarters was in the center of the city and I had to be there to train five days a week.

One day while riding home on the subway I noticed a girl staring at me from about 3 feet away. She quickly averted her gaze but then made eye contact again before nervously stepping towards me and saying hello. I could tell she spoke absolutely zero English and wasn't used to talking with foreigners. "You this stop?", she asked. I said yes and she said "I this stop. We can together?" As we got off I took over in Chinese and she said she would like to meet me on Saturday morning if I would be free. We exchanged numbers and went our separate ways after agreeing to meet at the McDonald's by that stop the following Saturday at 9am.

On Saturday I arrived at the McDonald's and she was already seated with two coffees for us. She was so nervous, with her hesitated movements while opening her creamers. It struck me as quite odd because she was such a gorgeous girl. Her name was Aicui, and she was quite older than me. 7 years older to be precise. I was only 25 and she was 32. We talked for a bit. I told her I was new to Beijing and she revealed that she was a highschool gym teacher. After McDonald's we walked around a bit before parting ways again. We agreed to meet again the next day.

The next day after we met I asked if I could see her place. She got really embarrassed and asked to come to my place instead. I would have invited her over to my place first but I was living with my recruiter's parents, so I figured her place would be more convenient. Anyways, when we got to the apartment my recruiter's father was so rude to her. He grabbed a spare pair of flip flops and threw them at her feet while cursing under his breath. When we got to my room I asked her what that was about and she said it was nothing, like she understood why he was behaving that way but it didn't matter. It's funny because a few days later I had an ex girlfriend, also Chinese, from a different city come by to visit me because she was in town and the old man treated her like a princess. Anyway, Aicui was sitting nervously on my bed. We...ahem.......you know. While we were doing that I noticed she was feeling a certain way. She seemed scared that I might just be wanting to bang her, and didn't want to be doing it so soon, but was afraid she wouldn't see me again if she said no. Afterward we talked a bit and went out for dinner then said goodbye once again.

The following Saturday she came to meet me on a street close to where I was living, but she had a couple luggages with her. I asked her what was going on and she said she was moving in with me. I was a bit taken back and asked her why she thought she could just move in with me. She looked like she wanted to cry, desparate even, so I said "You know what? You can move in with me once I move out into my own apartment." I let her keep her luggage with me until then.

The next week she said she had a surprise. We met and hopped the subway, riding it to the easternmost stop (Pingguo Yuan?). Apparently her work was having a picknick and she wanted to introduce me to her colleagues. They were all dudes, and all of them were in love with her. They were all in the friendzone. Nice group of guys. One was a bit standoffish towards me in an endearing sort of way. We all ate together, then her and I separated from the group to make our own path up the mountain. On the subway ride home she fell asleep on my shoulder. The next day she took me to see Wang Fu Jing and the Forbidden city.

The following Saturday I got some bad news. The company was going to be sending me to a far away city in the south of China. My hands we're tied because I was on a proper employer sponsored work visa this time round. I had to tell Aicui. She didn't understand. The recruiter lady would cancel my visa if I didn't go. The girl thought I could just make shit happen but I couldn't back then. It was very sad. I helped her take her luggage back to her place.

When we got back to her place I realized why she was embarrassed to let me come over before. She was a underground dweller. One of thousands of people in Beijing who live underground, like "mole people", because of poverty. The girl had nothing in her little room. Congrete walls with no windows and a piece of plywood with a padlock on it for a door. Other than that she had a desk with a light on it. Her bed was just another piece of plywood with a sheet over it. Outside of her room were makeshift communal showers. No natural light anywhere.

I felt so bad to leave her there. I was shocked too. The girl was such a beauty. A real precious gem. I've never met someone with such spirit, and to think she was living in poverty. Maybe that's why my recruiter's father treated her so rudely when I brought her over. Maybe he could see something I couldn't since he was a local.

A few days later, when I had gotten to my new city, she sent me a poem that she'd written along with a picture of herself via QQ before saying goodbye a final time and then immediately blocking me.

This is the one I've regretted most in my life. I've always thought about her. I had a lot of shit going on back then and didn't think too much at the time. Girls were in and out of my life. After about a year or two though I realized she was pretty special. Not something you find very often. A rare diamond that I let slip away. I always found myself thinking that I wish I could have done something different. I probably could have. Oh well.

Read every word. :FeelsWeakMan:

Hindsight is 20/20, my friend. Most people don’t realize what’s in front of them until it’s too late.

Why did she block you, though? Didn’t she like you?

I've thought about that alot too. Especially in the immediate aftermath. Dwelling on it over time I've come to figure it was because I was gone, and she knew I wouldn't be coming back. She knew I probably could have found a way and worked something out if I had the will. The thing is though I didn't even think to offer her to come with me.

She was pretty heartbroken I could tell. She knew I liked her but she could tell I didn't have such serious feelings as she did. With her being a lot more mature than me, a little wiser too, I think she knew that if I had stayed in Beijing I would have ended up falling seriously in love with her. I couldn't see it just yet, even though I knew I liked her a lot, but over the years having her enter my mind again and again I've come to realize that's exactly what would have happened.

Read every letter unc. this was a good read. I’m also an East Asian so I know that people like her who are lower class do get treated poorly, that’s the nature of society in china. It did seem like she truly liked u as a person not just because ur ethnicity.
I’m wondering if you could turn back time, would you do anything different?
It’s not too late to find her if you already know her name and past occupation. Don’t have to fuck her and cheat on your wife but it would be nice to catch up after a while

That question puts me in a difficult situation. I'd have to say no I wouldn't do anything different, knowing I'd eventually be with my wife. Though seeing her face again after about 12 years of nothing but memories has filled me with kind of yearning, but it will pass. The heart certainly wishes I could say "yes" to that question at the moment. I really can't convey how unique she was. I was only a couple years in China at the time and didn't yet understand the kinds of people you come across or what could would be counted as rare. Everything was still kind of new to me.

That makes sense. Regret is one of the hardest emotions to deal with, I appreciate you sharing this with the forum, I really enjoyed reading this anyhow.

I had to leave because of unforeseen circumstances and it ended our relationship. We lost all ways of communication. Even though we only knew eachother for about a month she crossed my mind a lot in the years to come. Dwelling on her from time to time while growing older I realized that she wasn't the type of girl you come across but once in a lifetime, and that if I had understood that then I would have sacrificed anything to stay. It was 12 years ago.
