Melanocytes only produce melanin in response to UV light, the highest energy wavelengths of light that reach past the atmosphere are between 280-315nm, termed UVB. These are the most damaging to your skin and are what most all sunscreens block. However, they are also responsible for 90% of melanin production.

The implications are obvious, damage to skin and collagen from sunlight and tanning are directly related. Tanning with sunscreen is an oxymoronic activity, as it just slows both DNA damage and tanning by the same rate.

This is lifefuel though for drugs like synthetic melanotan-II, as this bypasses the 1:1 ratio of tanning and dna damage.

I don’t burn anymore. Sunlight is essential to our health. If you burn, your body is lacking in some departments. Also, male pattern baldness is an evolutionary adaptation to low levels of sunlight exposure

Where are you getting this 90% melanin production number?

Also i thought melanin production has a baseline unaffected by sun. For example black people always have dark skin even if they rot inside all day.

It’s true. Have you ever wondered why fair-skinned people with light hair (such as Northern Europeans) are much more prone to balding, compared to Africans, Middle Easterners or South East Asians? The primary role of hair is absorbing UV radiation. Denser/darker hair blocks UV radiation much more efficiently than blonde or red hair. Premature balding is merely an adaptation to increase UV absorption and maintain sufficient vitamin D synthesis in the skin of populations living in areas with lower UV index. Hair is our natural sunscreen and we’ve been progressively shedding it because we’re getting less sun exposure due to living mostly indoors, sunscreen and clothes. Worms don’t have bodyhair. Guess why. Sun-loving insects such as wasps do. It’s not rocket science. Sun exposure and hair density go hand in hand for all species on the planet.

North Africans and Indians bald at a pretty high rate I think even the lower class ones out in the sun a lot. How would that be explained?
 
Lycopene to counter act sun damage
Not just lycopene. Beta-carotene, asthaxantin, lutein and zeaxanthin have been part of our natural diet since the early days of humanity. Humans unaffected by racial admixture, globalization and civilization - mainly native populations who still live in their natural environment - have mostly been spared by the diseases of civilization. Wearing clothes, using sunscreen, lack of movement, spending the majority of the day indoors, nutrient-deficient diets, obesity, moving across continents, accelerated race mixing, environmental pollution and countless of other things we aren’t genetically equipped to handle within such a short amount of time have made us chronically ill and miserable. The only reason we still exist as a species (albeit a different one) is because we’ve been equipped with an insane amount of protective and adaptive mechanisms. It’s time to wake up guys!

Not compared to light-skinned Northern Europeans. Every other average blonde-haired, fair-skinned German starts balding in his twenties. Balding is literally just an adaptive mechanism. AR receptor hyperactivity, the Wnt/β-catenin pathway, localized AR hypomethylation etc. are all legit mechanisms that contribute to the miniaturization of scalp hair follicles, but the human physiology is extremely smart and resorts to these tools for a specific reason that’s relevant for the survival of our species. Nothing happens randomly. The biggest mistake of modern medicine is the assumption that we get sick or deteriorate randomly without reason
