The problem with music

When I hear stuff like Radiohead or John Coltrane it's hard to tell if it's actually quality music or if I'm forced to see it that way because of how much it's been portrayed as "the good stuff" and the social value that arguably outweighs the sonic value.

Well I think that’s a simultaneously a good point and also a little silly? I mean there’s lots of things we like because we perceive that other people like them. If you’re enjoying the music at all then that matters more no? Music is something made by humans, and we are social creatures, so the social value of any given thing will play a large role in determining its importance.

The social baggage is exactly what declarifies the intrinsic quality of the music itself as sound. If you're enjoying it because you know that other people find it to be significant and like it a lot, or at least claim to, then you're enjoying the people more - you get what I'm saying? Of course I understand that music styles carry sociocultural and genealogical gravitas but that also shrouds how affective the music is when it's on its own. I'm sure that most people wouldn't say that the second song has more artistic value than the first but more people will favor the second one because of the social connotations and because it's designed to appeal in a more shallow way (I can sort of see how my claim might be flawed).
