Is because it forces society to pander to the majority (biggest consumer base) aka normies. Automatically and by default this means everything has to be lowest common denominator bullshit and of low quality. Example: Soviet bread vs western bread. Soviet bread was actually very high quality because the state had lots of bakeries mass producing high quality bread and then selling them almost the same day. No preservatives or regard for shelf-life. All the while in the west you get shitty mass produced shite designed to maximise shelf-life with little regard for quality. Even for so called "premium" bread this is true.
Also, look at social mores and values throughout the world before and after everything started being profit driven just lol.
Fact of the matter is that high standards are not something that just happens naturally because most people want them, but because they are MAINTAINED by a small minority of exceptional individuals. Anything that panders to the mainstream, almost without exception, will be shit.
