The idea that bullying or trauma “turns” someone gay as a survival mechanism isn’t supported by scientific evidence. Here’s why:
- Sexual orientation develops early
- Research suggests that sexual orientation is largely shaped by biology (genes, prenatal hormones, brain development) long before social experiences like bullying.
- Most people report first feeling same-sex attraction well before adolescence (often in childhood), long before experiences like bullying could “cause” it.
- Bullying is common, but outcomes vary
- Many straight men are bullied, and they remain straight.
- Many gay men are not heavily bullied, yet they are gay.
- If bullying “caused” homosexuality, we’d expect nearly all bullied boys to be gay — but that’s not the case.
- Survival theory doesn’t match evidence
- The idea that the brain “switches orientation” for survival assumes sexuality is flexible like a coping mechanism. But studies show orientation is generally stable and not something people can consciously change in response to trauma.
- Correlation vs. causation
- It is true that gay men often report higher rates of childhood bullying — but this is better explained by the fact that they were perceived as different (in mannerisms, interests, or appearance) and targeted because of that difference.
- In other words: being non-conforming may lead to both bullying and being gay, but one doesn’t cause the other.
So the theory doesn’t add up because homosexuality isn’t a response to trauma — it’s a natural variation of human sexuality. Trauma might shape how someone feels about their sexuality, but it doesn’t create it.
