Parents were responsible for 61% of child homicides involving children under the age of five, with many cases involving murder-suicides. While most filicides are committed by Whites, reflecting their status as the demographic majority, negro offenders and victims were significantly over-represented (as usual) relative to their share of the U.S. population, which was roughly 12–13% during the study periods. Studies consistently find higher rates of infanticide and infant homicide among negro infants than among White infants. Broader data on fatal child abuse and neglect likewise indicate substantially higher fatality rates among niglets. According to FBI statistics, an average of 450 children are murdered by their parents each year in the United States. In 2013 alone, homicide ranked among the five leading causes of death for children in the United States and among the three leading causes for children between the ages of one and four, with notable cases such as the killing of Caylee Marie Anthony at the hands of her “mother”.
