A vaccine is likely to take years to develop. If the development process is shortened, the worst case risk of a vaccine is worse than the virus itself. No one is coming forward saying they have a prophylaxis.
Lockdown for one or a few years is unsustainable and even in the countries leading the control efforts, people are fighting tooth and nail against the virus, and it is not obvious that the virus can be contained. I live in one of those countries. There could be a second wave in the winter. Most of us could get infected. Only China could really lock down their cities, municipalities, and provinces and continue to run their economy effectively. If we wait and there is a second wave, the world is screwed and China will emerge as the sole world superpower in 5 years.
There is just one solution that I know of that could allow practically all of us to move on with life: Variolation.
Self infect with small viral dose. The illness should not be severe, and the risk of death should be very low. I don't know this, but I know that the risk of death is highly dependent on the viral dose because infected medical workers usually have more severe illness and die at a higher rate among their age groups. The West screwed up and failed to lead. Based on the UK's and the Netherlands' statements about their strategies regarding herd immunity, I suspect they are considering variolation. But I think people could form a movement and do it at home, too.
If this sounds crazy, just consider the options. Wait, and you may accidentally get infected with a high viral dose. Life will be boring and hopeless in the meantime. Or, self infect and move on. Time could be running short, and it would take months for enough people in the world to variolate in time to develop herd immunity before too many people get infected, and there is too much chaos to manage.
