PSR = principle of sufficient reason
What is the difference between the strong and weak PSR?
the strong PSR states that all things have a sufficient reason for its existence as well as what it isnt, while the weak PSR states that all things have a sufficient reason for its existence but not necessarily what it isnt.
Example:
imagine a truly coin
you flip the coin and it lands on heads
the strong PSR states there is a reason why it landed on heads rather than tails, while the weak PSR states that the reason the coin landed on heads is because you flipped it. There isnt necessarily a reason why it didnt land on tails, it just is.
Back to the argument
lets say that we have somehow explained existence purely naturalistically(cyclical models of the universe, infinite regress etc)
if we accept that the strong PSR is true its not merely enough to posit a naturalistic explanation we then have to explain why it is X naturalistic explanation and not Y
this explanation would have to be beyond the realm of naturalism because then we would arrive at the same problem.
So is the strong PSR true?
No one really knows but personally Im of the opinion it isnt. QM highly implies it isnt and while there are deterministic interpretations of QM for various reasons physicists favor non deterministic ones.
