Charles Sobhraj. The Serpent" or "The Bikini Killer. Famouse and charismatic French nationality but Indian origin serial killer he preyed on Western backpackers along the hippie trail in the 1970s.
Using his charm and fake identities as a gem dealer, he befriended young western tourists in Thailand, Nepal, and India drugged them, robbed their belongings and murdered them in cold blood. His modus operandi was surgically precise leaving 0 clues or any evidence he would strangling, beating, or burning their bodies. The cops and investigators even called it's as if a ghost has killed them
His downfall came in later stages when he got careless. In 1976 Sobhraj was finally caught in New Delhi after botching an attempt to drug and rob a large group of French tourists in a hotel-survivors alerted police leading to his arrest for poisoning and related murders.
Police was able to link him to at 12 confirmed killings but the real number is a lot higher. He also once escaped prison in Tihar jail in 1986. After decades of evasion, multiple convictions (including life sentences in Nepal for two 1975 killings), and 19 years behind bars, he was released in December 2022 on humanitarian grounds due to age and health. Now in his 80s and living freely in France. There's even a Netflix movie released about him
