The Truth About Castor Oil And Its Effect On Eyelash Growth.

What is Castor Oil?

Castor oil is around 90% ricinoleic acid, which is a fatty acid. A Fatty acid (for the eyelashes specifically) will condition the hair shaft, protect against breakage, and lock in moisture. Due to the effects ricinoleic acid has, the lash is less likely to fall out.

Can Castor Oil Grow Eyelashes?
Many people claim that castor oil grew their eyelashes. However, castor oil cannot directly stimulate nor promote hair growth, it can only nourish them. There is no scientific evidence showing it can directly stimulate hair growth nor promote it, it can only support the follicles that already exist.

How it differs from other hair growth treatments.
Unlike items such as minoxidil, bimatoprost, latonprost, or eyelash serums (with prostaglandins), castor oil does not affect the hair growth cycle, nor create new lash growth.

(eyelashes follow this cycle as well, just on a shorter timeframe).

Why lashes may appear longer
When applied to the lashes, castor oil helps reduce breakage, applying that shiny, glossy coat, nourishing the eyelashes. This can make them healthier overall, but also make them appear longer and fuller. Due to this effect, people are led to believe their lashes have grown, when in reality, the existing hairs are simply better conditioned and less vulnerable to breakage.

An example.
For a better understanding, the average human eyelash measures to around 10mm; if a lash falls out at 7mm, and then another at 8mm (without castor oil), it won’t reach its full natural potential. However, with castor oil, these existing eyelashes won't fall out as easily, staying attached long enough to reach their full natural potential.

The average person has 90 120 lashes per eyeEach eye sheds 2 3 lashes per day

Should I use it?
Feel free to use castor oil if you want to condition and nourish your lashes, allowing them to appear thicker and more defined; however, do not expect crazy eyelash growth.

Conclusion
Castor oil does not make eyelashes grow longer. It protects existing lashes from breakage, allowing them to reach and keep their natural, intended length. Thus, castor oil maintains the natural hair growth cycle and keeps the eyelashes from snapping, making them appear longer/thicker.

this may seem like a water post haha, but some people genuinely still wonder this. some extra clarification can never hurt, hope this can help :feelsokman:
