Finasteride was approved in 1992 for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and later in 1997 for male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia), while dutasteride was approved in 2001 for BPH and has a similar mechanism but is not FDA-approved for hair loss, though it is used off-label. Both are 5-alpha reductive inhibitors that block the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which causes hair loss.



However Dutasteride also blocks both type I and type II isozymes, leading to a better reduction in DHT.

DIFFRENCE BETWEEN FINASTERIDE AND DUTASTERIDE

A study shows that the greatest increase in total hair count at the first time point was observed with the daily 0.5 mg dose of dutasteride. This drug and dose bested the daily 1 mg of finasteride by a mean difference of 7.1 hairs per cm2 (95% CI, 5.1-9.3) which is at least a minimum of 1000 extra hairs.

For example: Just a few weeks ago, I was very sceptical of 5AR inhibitors, simply because I had not researched them at all. Just by using the search bar on Google and Looksmax.org I was able to acquire all the information needed.
