The Looksmaxing Encyclopedia
If you're a fellow grey who recently joined and has noticed a bunch of unfamiliar terms, but can't get anyone to explain them because they just troll you instead, this is for you.
Core Terms
Looksmaxxing: The practice of trying to maximize or improve one's physical appearance through methods ranging from basic grooming and skincare to fitness or cosmetic procedures.
Max / -maxxing: A suffix added to something you are trying to maximize or improve. For example, skinmaxxing means trying to maximize the appearance or quality of your skin.
Softmaxxing: Refers to less invasive and generally lower-risk methods of self-improvement, such as skincare, grooming, improving your hairstyle, dieting, and going to the gym.
Hardmaxxing: Refers to more invasive or higher-risk methods of self-improvement, most notably cosmetic surgery. There is no universally agreed-upon dividing line between softmaxxing and hardmaxxing, and people disagree over whether things such as steroid use count as hardmaxxing.
Lookism: Discrimination, prejudice, or differential treatment based on physical appearance or attractiveness. Within looksmaxxing communities, the term is often used more broadly for the idea that appearance significantly influences how people are perceived and treated.
Mog: Derived from AMOG ("Alpha Male of the Group"). To mog someone means to overshadow or outperform them in some way, whether in aesthetics, status, money, height, physique, etc.
Looksmatch: Someone considered to be roughly equal to you in physical attractiveness. For example, a man's looksmatch would be a woman perceived as being around the same overall attractiveness level as him.
Halo: A particularly strong positive trait that noticeably improves someone's overall appearance or perception. For example, exceptional height, hair, an attractive eye area, or a strong physique may be described as a halo.
Failo: The opposite of a halo. A particularly weak or unattractive trait that noticeably harms someone's overall appearance or perception.
Ascend: To significantly improve one's looks, status, dating success, or overall situation. In incel terminology, it can specifically mean escaping celdom by entering a relationship or becoming sexually successful.
Pills and Ideologies
Bluepilled: Originally derived from The Matrix. In this context, it refers to someone perceived as holding conventional or overly optimistic views about dating and attraction—for example, believing that personality is essentially all that matters and that physical appearance plays little role.
Redpilled: Refers to someone who believes they have recognized uncomfortable or non-mainstream truths about dating, attraction, relationships, and male-female dynamics. In looksmaxxing spaces, it is commonly associated with the belief that traits such as looks, status, confidence, and self-improvement substantially affect dating success.
Blackpilled: Originally emerged partly as an antithesis to the more self-improvement-oriented aspects of red-pill ideology. The original blackpill placed particularly heavy emphasis on immutable traits—especially physical appearance, height, and genetics—and was often strongly deterministic or nihilistic about a person's ability to improve their dating prospects.
The term has since broadened considerably, and today many self-described blackpilled people simply mean that they strongly believe in lookism and the importance of physical attractiveness. As a result, many modern users who call themselves blackpilled still believe heavily in self-improvement and ascending, despite that being less consistent with the term's original fatalistic meaning.
Whitepilled: Refers to moving beyond the nihilism or obsessive focus associated with the blackpill. A whitepilled person generally accepts the realities they believe the blackpill reveals while choosing not to obsess over them, instead focusing on self-improvement, personal goals, hobbies, purpose, and enjoying life.
-pill: A suffix added to a belief or observation that someone considers particularly important or revealing. For example, the heightpill is the belief that height has a major effect on dating, while the IQpill refers to the belief that IQ strongly influences life outcomes.
Brutal: Used to emphasize the severity of a particular pill, flaw, or situation. For example, someone might describe the heightpill, a physical flaw, or the blackpill in general as "brutal."
Water: Used in response to an extremely obvious statement—the equivalent of saying, "Water is wet."
Incel-Derived Terms
-cel: A suffix derived from incel. It is attached to a trait to describe someone associated with or disadvantaged by that trait; for example, acnecel. The person does not necessarily have to be an actual incel.
Fakecel: Used either for someone who is pretending to be an incel or for an incel who possesses conventionally desirable traits—such as a good face, height, money, or status—implying that he has the means to leave celdom.
-let: Stems from a diminutive suffix used to denote something smaller or younger, as in piglet or booklet. In internet slang, it has evolved into a mocking suffix for someone perceived as lacking a particular attribute. For example, manlet refers to a short man.
LDAR: Acronym for "Lay Down and Rot." Refers to giving up and doing nothing to improve your situation.
Wizard: Someone who reaches the age of 30 while still being a virgin. The term is relatively uncommon today.
Dry Spell: A prolonged period without having sex.
Slayer: A man who is highly successful with women, particularly one who regularly has sex with attractive women. The term focuses more on actual sexual success than simply being physically attractive.
Dating and Gender Terms
Beta Bux: Refers to a man who financially provides for a partner, usually with the implication that the woman is primarily with him because of his money, stability, or provisioning rather than genuine physical attraction.
AWALT: Acronym for "All Women Are Like That." Refers to the belief that certain negative traits attributed to women, such as hypergamy, apply to all women without exception. AMALT ("All Men Are Like That") is the male equivalent.
JBW: Acronym for "Just Be White." Refers to the belief that being white provides a major advantage in attractiveness and dating, particularly in certain countries or among certain ethnic groups.
HQNP: Acronym for "High Quality Non-Primitive." Generally used to describe an attractive woman who is perceived as more reserved, intelligent, educated, feminine, or relationship-oriented, as opposed to highly promiscuous or "primitive."
WAB: Acronym for "Woman Absolute Beginner." A term used for a woman with little or no sexual experience, essentially the female equivalent of an "absolute beginner."
JB: Stands for "Jailbait." Usually refers to an underage girl who is perceived as being sexually attractive.
Roastie: A noun used to describe a woman whose genitals have somehow magically mutilated into an entirely different shape, resembling a sandwich, due to her having multiple sexual partners.
They believe that a woman's labia somehow stretches when she has sex, although miraculously this only happens if she has unmarried sex with different men. The word "roastie" indicates that they think elongated labia look like roast beef.
It is primarily used by men who don't understand vaginas—often because they have never seen one.
Landwhale: An obese or very overweight person, especially a woman.
Agecuck: A derogatory term directed at someone who strongly opposes relationships with large age gaps.
Types of Maxxing
Jestermaxxing: Acting excessively goofy, funny, or clownish in an attempt to gain attention, social approval, or attraction.
Thugmaxxing: Adopting or exaggerating a stereotypical "thug" persona, usually in an attempt to appear more attractive to women who are perceived to prefer that image.
Whitemaxxing: Attempting to make one's appearance more closely resemble features associated with white/Caucasian populations, whether through changes in skin tone, styling, or cosmetic procedures intended to alter ethnically distinctive facial features.
Forum Slang
Grey: A new or low-post-count user. On Org, users with fewer than 500 posts have grey-colored usernames, hence the name.
Avi: Short for avatar. Refers to your profile picture.
Mirin: Derived from admiring. Used to express admiration for someone's physique, looks, achievements, thread, etc.
Buddy Boyo: Means friend, bro, or dude, sometimes used jokingly or patronizingly.
Bhai: Hindi for "brother."
DWBI: Acronym for "Don't Worry About It."
DNR: Acronym for "Did Not Read."
Fuel / -fuel: A suffix added to something that reinforces or "fuels" a particular feeling, belief, or worldview. For example, hopefuel refers to something that inspires hope, while suifuel refers to something perceived as worsening suicidal or hopeless thoughts.
Abused Dog: Refers to the idea that severe negative experiences—usually during childhood or early adolescence—can leave long-lasting effects on someone's personality and behavior. Examples include bullying or parental abuse. The term comes from the behavior sometimes seen in severely mistreated dogs, which may continue to show fear, flinching, or defensive reactions even after the abuse has stopped.
ER: Short for Elliot Rodger.
Rope: Telling someone to commit suicide, derived from the idea of suicide by hanging.
