The secret to the over grown mod cut for straight or wavy hair is growing out your hair and getting a good haircut as the base.
Ask your barber this:
"I want an overgrown, textured mod cut. I want to keep a lot of length and have it look deliberately messy and fluffy rather than clean or faded. I want a long, broken-up fringe that comes down around my eyebrows and can fall toward my eyes. Keep the sides full and cover most of the ears rather than taking them tight. I want lots of internal scissor texture and layers through the crown so the hair separates and moves, but I don't want it thinned out excessively. Keep the back/nape longer and softly tapered, not a skin fade."
Then specifically:

1) Fringe
Ask for:

  • Eyebrow-to-upper-eye length
  • Approximately 10–14 cm / 4–5.5 in, depending on how your hair shrinks
  • Choppy/irregular rather than a perfectly straight line
  • Point-cut with scissors
  • Plenty of separation
  • Long enough that you can push it aside or let it fall forward
Do NOT make it a short Caesar-style fringe
The fringe is one of the most important parts.

You want:

long → broken → choppy → falling forward

not:

short → straight → perfectly even

2) The Sides

Tell the barber:

"I don't want a fade. Keep the sides long and bulky, especially around the temple and above the ear."

You want the hair to form a rounded silhouette.

Approximate target:

Temple: 8–11 cm / 3–4.5 in
Around ear: 6–9 cm / 2.5–3.5 in
Upper sides: 9–12 cm / 3.5–5 in
The exact numbers aren't sacred—the shape matters more.

Very important
Don't let them aggressively use thinning shears.

Say:

"Please don't heavily thin the hair with thinning shears. I want the density to stay because the bulk is part of the style. Use point cutting and scissor-over-comb/internal layering instead."

Heavy thinning can make this style look stringy instead of thick and fluffy.

3) Crown
This is where the "overgrown" appearance comes from.

Ask:

"Keep the crown long and textured. I want the layers to blend into the fringe and sides rather than having an obvious short crown."

You want enough hair that when you shake your head, the crown moves.

Think:

long crown → shorter gradually toward the perimeter

rather than:

short crown → long sides

4) Back/nape

The second photo is particularly useful here.

Tell your barber:

"Keep the back longer and natural. I want a soft scissor taper at the nape, not a fade. Don't square it off too aggressively."

You want the nape to look slightly grown out.

Not:

❌ skin fade
❌ disconnected undercut
❌ sharp barbershop taper
❌ extremely clean neckline

Instead:

✅ soft taper
✅ natural neckline
✅ longer center-back
✅ layered transition
✅ slightly messy silhouette

Then show your barber some reference photos like the ones listed below:

if you have any questions don't feel embarrassed to ask!
Part 2 for styling is coming soon..

How long would it take me to grow my hair to the desired length if I currently have like a mid taper with bangs almost up to my eyebrows, and should I get haircuts during the growing out process, or should I just let my hair grow freely at the expense of looking like a caveman

Good Question! I started with a taper as well to help grow my hair back more healthy. It took me 5-6 months with maintenance cuts. I cut my own bangs bc they would get rlly long but I kept the bulk and the rest until the hair grew over my ears and it started to mushroom out, then I went to the barbor. I suggest watching appealprices video on TikTok on how to cut the mod cut fringe and only cut the front yourself no layering. I hope this helps!

if you have a bad barber I suggest going on TikTok and looking for barbers in your area, look at there work and if they do the type of cuts you want and book with them, even if the price is high a good haircut can make or break your acsention. hope this helped!

Why did you not let the barber cut your bangs at the maintenance visits
