This guy is probably jobless and homeless and he's Black on top of that. He's among what society would consider to be the dregs of society but he commands the space in that moment. Not even the President, if in the subway alone, would affect others that strongly. The people who are considered inferior actually have the strongest visceral grip on others.
I was walking around an Ivy campus and this one scraggly old guy on a walker making sped noises was scaring people like the jaguar in this video so he made all of those uppity Ivy leaguers look like they ain't shit. There were a lot fewer people in the scenario I saw but the effect was still the same.
