There was something about Greeks sinking ships. That says nothing about the position of the church, though. They could have been (and likely were) completely irreligious people. Practicing Christians were traditionally the most strident opponents of nationalists.

Who cares? Christianity is about the body of Christ, and these people aren't a part of it. Two or three people coming together in Jesus' name under a blue tarp are closer to God than any of these people. It's only a select few that God is after. Most people who call themselves Christians will be shunned from the kingdom of God and spend eternity in the lake of fire. If you want to call yourself a Christian to be a part of a community here on earth, and you don't repent of that, then God will reject you.
