The issue is not the military getting defeated. If they didn't know how to kill the walkers or how its gets spread. I can see them fall.

Apparently you only become a walker when you get bitten or you die of natural or unnatural causes.
The later would take a long time and very easy to control and i dont see the first way as believable way leading to an pandemic because of the nature of the walkers.

8000 people die a day in the usa. People around them are genrally old or hurt and they have never seen a walker so many people would die day 1 . Around 100 000 probably would have died on day one.

Then the usa need to figure out a diseases exist maybe that will take to 2-3 days plus the public that probably would kill 500 000-million on day 4 .

Then they need to understand how its spread. To be sure its spread with bite probably day 8 or something. So over a million is already dead .

Figureing out they are dead probably 2 weeks - 3 or they can't be cure probably a bit longer . So we have already have massive death toll.

Then they would start killing them

If it takes hours you are wrong becasue bodies would already be somewhere in morgue or a funeral home. If its quickly your scenario seems possible.

There are fundamental biochemistry and physiological reasons the premise is stupid. But the biggest plothole in my opinion is that there are still herds of zombies around years later. Even if it were only 2% of the population that survived the initial outbreak, it would a very capable 2%, and that 2% could easily wipeout all the herds of walkers the first month. So going past the first month there would be no herds of walkers, just new walkers from the recently deceased, and an occasional oddball walker that escaped the first month's purge.
