PSL originally just meant attractiveness itself. What happened back in the day is that people then created some of the theory behind why attractiveness is the way it is, including measurements, and you can take a highly dimorphic man who on paper should be maximally attractive based on those measurements. However, due to the widespread use of birth control, people also noticed the phenomenon of women physically simping over basically the feminine TikTok eboy phenotype, so the term "appeal" was created. But instead of recalculating PSL itself, the creation of appeal versus PSL ended up meaning measurements versus fuckability.
And because on forums men with no sexual desire for men started glazing people with high PSL, logically, since they can't understand why women desire the estrogenized men, as they can only approximate fuckability, the culture started setting its own standards: PSL means attractiveness, and appeal means pretty boy, which gets viewed as kind of gay. So people wanted to look hypermasculine because they themselves viewed it as cool, but that's not actually what should matter, which is fuckability, because originally looksmaxxing was a hedonist-centric ideology, you looksmax for maximal pleasure and looks are just a tool to get there.
Now the culture has shifted toward one of "aesthetics," looking cool for no functional reason by maximizing PSL. A similar phenomenon would be bodybuilders who think it looks cool to look big, but women don't really enjoy that level of it. Because of this aesthetics thing, there's also a phenomenon of men tricking other men into thinking that PSL is all that matters even for hedonism-based people, and it's misleading them, because looksmax culture and normal attractiveness cultural standards are different. As I am a hedonist, I rate and want to be rated on fuckability, not on an arbitrary aesthetic, which I view as gay.
