And that the other 1,000,000 or so people that call themselves programmers are hacks that go through the motions of programming hoping to stumble upon a solution to the problem they are trying solve. And/or they just use higher level interfaces which have inherent limitations. Or their definition of programing is so superficial that they only able to do prosaic things like change screen colors.

I come to this conclusion because the large majority of interfaces I have to deal with on a daily basis are super buggy. It is only the super large companies like Amazon or Google that seem to be able to produce a high quality user interface, and the rest of the world that can't afford to hire the 100 or so actually good programmers on the planet are stuck with using an ever changing carousel of patch hacks.

You could say that about every field/subject

Most definitely are hacks who write dogshit messy code with zero regard for how they got something to work just so long as they got it to work somehow

jfl, 100? ur joking.

where u r correct is normies are dumb and assume cos someone has a qualification, or a job title, then they are legitimately that. this is not at all true.

for any top skill in my industry, I'd say globally around 0.5% of people who do the job are legitimate. if u exclude the utter dross sitting in some 3rd world shithole etc, then I'd still.say it is going to be around 2%, and at the ABSOLUTE top.tier places, as much as 10% of people are legit.

I think programming is different, its HARDER to larp it, so I think there are at least 500 legit programmers, maybe as many as 1000.

Tyler Maher is one of them
My first action after caging at this was google searching "Tyler Maher computer" in the hopes that for some unknown reason there would be a picture of him modelling while sitting at a computer

Should've known that GigaChads don't have any photo evidence of ever touching a desktop PC

I did stumble upon this pic I've never seen before during my search though

You understand what I am saying, and appear to have enough inside information on the topic to confirm in principle what I theorize, we just differ in the magnitude of the issue. 1000 probably is more accurate, if it were only 100 they would all be managers and/or super millionaires.

The problem as I see it is that when a non computer expert needs to hire a computer programmer it is impossible for them to access their competency because the best programmers are often weirdos with poor social skills and no real knowledge beyond computer programming and they speak their own language. Conversely if I am hiring an attorney or a doctor, I can do a modest amount of research on my subject of interest before the meeting to become proficient in the language, and I can feel them out to see if they have the general knowledge and intelligence to be my doctor or lawyer.

Are you a programmer op.
No. I have a degree in Chemical Engineering. When I went to school Computer Programing was mostly (80%) the antisocial province of dudes that looked like this, that fed punch cards into a mainframe computer card reader at 2am.

What's it like being a chemical engineer? I can't decide between it and medicine. On one hand, chemical engineering pays better, pays earlier and you won't have to study your whole life, one the other hand learning about the body and illness seems very fascinating and like it will actually have "purpose". Also ChE has like 90:10 male:female while medicine has ~50:50 and medicine is more respected socially.

Is your job boring? Do you regret it?

yes yours right, my field is similar.
maybe blind arrogance, but I think I am one of the 2% legit people in my field, as such I have a small core group of legit people I like to keep with me.

one startling thing I have noticed, especially in larger corporations, where u are going to have more illegitimate 'experts' is as you say complete inability to hire technical people. in fairness it's as you say if they have zero understanding themselves how the hell can they assess and evaluate, in a couple of hours, the sperg sitting in front of them? it would be like me trying to recruit a poet.

you're point about dr or lawyer is not true though, cos u ignore the IQ part. a normie has IQ around 90, so while what u say about researching and benchmarking a lawyer or dr is true, a normie will never think to do this.
