Basically they're saying it's a Sunni Islamist regime. Technically NONE have ever gained power in the middle east apart from Muslim Brotherhood in 2013 for a brief moment before they were removed in coup.

But reality is Syria is fractured and HTS is just one of several groups that are the "Syrian opposition".

It's too early to say that because every Syrian group out there is ideologically opposed to each other. Even elements within HTS itself range from Salafi jihadists to traditional Islamists.
