There is a point where looks don't matter

I don't think I'm attractive to be honest, but people around me keep approaching me to tell me how good looking I am. I don't believe it, sometimes I think they're just making fun of me. But if it's true, then why don't I have many close friends? It's simply because I'm too boring and compliant. Other than telling me about my looks, people don't approach me for anything else, it feels lonely. I've tried to learn conversation skills, but I'm always too anxious to apply them. Help, anyone?
