The idea of good and bad exists as an instinct to benefit society (probably more at a base level than overall, so less “does this benefit my country” and more something like “does this benefit the people immediately around me or hurt them?”) so we all survive, it can be measured in the form of “do my actions benefit society or attack it?”

Most people are neutral. Good and evil is somewhat subjective and is dependent on what the overton window etc.

The problem with wanting people to be good is that you usually want them to be good to you, which is innately selfish. For example I don't really care about you @TraumatisedOgre and you don't really care about me. I don't want to see anything bad to you, but I would not go out of my way to actively improve your life. I assume you feel the same way. There are too many people on this planet to care for them all.

I think this the best way to view people, don't expect to much from them. However you shouldn't go to the other extreme and never trust people. You cannot make it in life as a lone wolf but you are still your own person.
