It's because he started making vids making fun of le libtards and did some edgy humor when it was in vogue so /pol/ started latching onto him and trying to meme this idea of him being a white supremacist. Then when Brenton Tarrant shot up that mosque he told people in his video to "subscribe to Pewdiepie". At some point he said "fucking nigger" while playing some game after he lost a shootout on that bridge and said Yukio Mishima was one of his favorite authors, this all together generated a lot of bad press for him, so he donated to the Anti-Defamation League to try and clear his name a while back.
