Immigrants drag it down a lot. I felt tall as shit when I lived in an 80% mexican city at 6'1.5, but I feel more like above average in my current town that is very high majority white. I'm pretty sure the young white male average is 5'11-ish.

It's also subconscious bias, you notice the taller and ignore the shorter because they're literally easier to see. Especially easy to do in cities where there are a lot of taller people even though there are probably the same or more amount shorter
