Yes, I'd dismiss it as not being real communism because it isn't "pure" communism, it's certainly a branch of communism, but not "Communism", when someone says they're a commie, you don't assume they're stalinist or maoist, this is just semantics

When people say they are a communist it could mean anything from classical leninism, trotskyism, maoism, stalinism or the more anarchist branches, communism is just a blanket term for all of these peoples so yes they are communist

Define real communism then? if we go by strictly marx's words then we rule out even people like lenin who disagreed with marx on quite a bit or had to expand heavily on what marx said and adapt it to the modern day, stalin wasnt some cynical mastermind either as historical records support him being a genuine ideological ML that even supported abolishing reforms that were not pragmatic whatsoever (abolishing the NEP for example) which shows he genuinely did care about ideological purity and viewed policy through that first for a large part, trying to say they arent ideological pure communist just turns into a ridiculous purity spiral
