The racial classifications in some of those slave owning states that seceded later are like that. In the antebellum South and even after the Civil War, racial classification in slave states remained only two things you either black or you are white.Everyone who isn't black is automatically classes as white so native Americans, mexicans, Asians all come under white.

It's because of the way the U.S. Census Bureau classify "race" and "ethnicity" for example someone like me would be classified as Asian Non-Hispanic because there is no indian category in the census.

It seems retarded but it's very hard to classify Americans into hard categories like white, black because the U.S. is so diverse. you'll see every kind of background and mix kids with three or more ancestries, Pacific Islander communities from tiny island you never heard off and first generation immigrants from all over the world That's why when an average white American takes a DNA test, the results look like a global map with bits and pieces from half a dozen regions across continents
