It's cause it's the only way you can judge someone before talking to them / reading about them.
There is no other way to judge someone.
Not only that but certain aspects of looks are correlated to being healthy.
So of course looks matter. If looks didn't matter people wouldn't care about how their room / house / car / kitchen looks.
