Thumb pulling is cope (according to orthodontists)

I spoke about thumping while consulting with the dental lady about getting braces (which I am soon).

I spoke about using your thumb to pull your pallet apart she said it would not work because you would have to hold for hours straight to even make anything move, and hours straight for days to make it permanent. Thoughts?
