thumbpulling without mewing?

Im not mewing since i cant breath while doing it at all.
My palate has the width of 42mm which seems to be the right since but idk whats wrong.
I heard that you MUST mew when you thumbpull, as the tongue puts the pressure and holds your teeth, which is needed because of the cheeks pushing from the other side.
