How exactly does the lower part of the jaw get wider as well when having a palate expander or thumbpulling?

Thumbpulling is water it doesnt work. Threre needs to be constant pressure (like how palate expander works) for something to actually change

Okay i just included it in the question. But how does the lower jaw change with the upper part if it even does?
