If you are planning to go to university soon, then when applying for student finance register as an independent student and then state you are Estranged. Registering as an independent student means they will not take your parent's financial situation into consideration. Secondly, estranged means to Student Finance that you do not have the support of your parents. This will make you eligible to receive the maximum maintenance loan. The maximum maintenance loan currently is £13000 per year. Additionally, since you are "Estranged" most universities will award you with the maximum bursary. This often ranges between £3500-£5000 per year. Additionally, as an Estranged student, most universities will discount your student accommodation. Student accommodation costs are usually £4000-£6000 per year. You could only have to pay half of that.

SFE will require evidence of your Estranged Status. The website states the following:

If you apply as an estranged student, you will need to give us some evidence. The easiest way to do this is to fill in the Confirmation of Estrangement Form. You can find this form on your online account once you’ve submitted your application.

Otherwise, you can send us a:

  • letter from your social worker
  • letter from a doctor that knows your situation
  • police report showing any related incidents
  • letter from a teacher that knows your situation
  • letter from a ‘person of good standing in the community’ (for example a solicitor, religious leader, or a counsellor)

300k students go to University each year. So clearly, they don't have the means to verify this. So if you go with the 5th option, and the person of good standing in your community is your best friend they won't even do shit and your estranged status will be accepted.

tldr: You can get 10k+ each year whilst your in uni and you can use it to fund surgeries

£10k is maximum? is that in England? Here in Scotland we only get £6.5 maximum maintenance loan.
