It's an old superstition, in the old days bald people were quite rare actually, so they were considered to be "blessed" somehow, you rarely see bald people in old photos, and most of them were intellectuals, people who spend a lot of time indoors, reading and studying, baldness in lower classes like peasants, workers, people who did a lot of physical labor and spend time outside was very rare.
This is probably one of the reason baldness has increased so much in our times - people spend now most of their time indoors, sitting at their computer, they rarely go outside or do manual labor.
