I used both gel and creme.

Gel helped me get rid of pretty much all my active acne within 4 months. I did experience severely dry skin and lips during the first month or so. Thereafter I started using creme to help scarring and skin texture in general (9 months on 0.05% right now).

Gel might be a bit overkill if you don’t have acne issues so in that case go with creme. Also, if you have facial hair, gel or lotion as they absorb easier than creme in this case.

i prefer altreno form, its liquid. gel mogs cream for oily skin tho.
