According to the newspaper Diena, Gatis' father once had problems with alcohol and sometimes abused his relatives. Repeatedly, Aldis Lagzdins was placed in police custody while drunk. This was one of the reasons why the boy's mother filed for divorce, took her son and left Kuldiga for Ventspils. After that the man hanged himself. Psychologists note that Gatis could have been influenced by the violent pictures he saw as a child. However, the final conclusion on his sanity will be given in a month. So far, none of the affected schoolchildren has ever filed a report with the police.

My guess is that Gatis was deemed mentally ill because he completely got away with the school stabbing and then was able to hop on some sort of welfare in Germany.
