I stopped watching football after the 2018 WC but I remember Mandzukic being a mogger the entire tournament. Tall as well.

They were either roasting you or genuinely trying to compliment you, but instead they came up with a backhanded compliment.
Study the art of the backhanded compliment so you will know in the future how to reply to this.
One generic backhanded compliment that works great on women is to say: "You don't look like the type who - insert here whatever the subject of discussion is". In this case you could have said: "You don't look like the type who is into football players...". This will make the women justify and explain themselves, and it's also slightly insulting because you assume something about them, but many won't know how to reply to this.
