WHAT IS A MICROCURRENT FACIAL DEVICE?
A microcurrent facial device is a handheld tool that delivers very low-level electrical currents to the muscles and tissues of the face. The current is so mild that most people feel only a slight tingling sensation or nothing at all. Although way less beneficial, a microcurrent facial device can encourage lipolysis which is the breakdown of fat. HOW CAN WE PROVE THIS WORKS? (FEEL FREE TO DNR)
- Haj Hamida et al., 2011 — human fat cells
- Researchers isolated human white adipocytes and exposed them to electrical stimulation.
- Certain stimulation protocols increased lipolysis by about 1.5–2.3× compared with baseline.
- They measured glycerol release, which is a standard marker of triglyceride breakdown.
- This is probably the strongest study for showing a direct electrical-stimulation → lipolysis effect.
- Noites et al., 2017 — randomized controlled trial
- 83 healthy adults received abdominal microcurrent stimulation followed by aerobic exercise, or placebo stimulation followed by exercise.
- The microcurrent group had significantly higher lipolytic activity, measured through serum glycerol.
- The authors concluded that microcurrent + exercise increased lipolysis compared with exercise alone.
- Microcurrent stimulation in cells and mice, 2023
- A study using 3T3-L1 fat cells and obese mice found that microcurrent stimulation affected pathways involved in adipocyte development and reduced abdominal adipose tissue volume in the mouse model.
- This provides additional biological evidence that microcurrent can interact with adipose tissue, although it obviously doesn't prove the same effect occurs in a human face.
- Review of microcurrent physiology
- A review discusses a possible mechanism involving sympathetic stimulation → norepinephrine → β3-adrenergic receptors → cAMP → activation of ATGL/HSL/MGL → triglyceride breakdown.
- In other words, electrical stimulation could theoretically encourage the biochemical process of lipolysis
SUPPLIES + INSTRUCTIONS:
- Microcurrent facial device
- Conductive microcurrent gel/activator
- Oil-free facial cleanser — clean skin helps conductivity; oils can interfere with the current.
How to use it
1. Clean your face.Wash with an oil-free cleanser and dry your skin completely.
2. Apply the conductive gel.
Spread a fairly generous, mask-like layer over the area you're treating. Work in sections so the gel doesn't dry out. If it starts drying, apply more.
3. Turn on the device.
Start at a comfortable intensity according to your device's instructions.
4. Keep both electrodes touching your skin.
Slowly glide upward and outward along areas such as the jawline, cheeks and forehead. Don't drag the device rapidly across your face. Manufacturer instructions generally use light-to-medium pressure and upward gliding motions. Simple.
RESULTS:
CONCLUSION
A Microcurrent facial device is a safe, non-invasive method that can be used to reduce facial fat for those who prefer not to opt for invasive methods like surgery, injectable fat dissolvents, or injectable peptides. But it is not as affective as ultrasonic cavitation.
