Have a degree
Got an offer for a science teacher job in Bangkok
Realised I wouldn’t save any money

Been looking at teaching English in China, because the salaries are similar to UK, but you need to do a TEFL course and I cba, and idk if the shit cheap ones online will count

I’m living with parents in UK. I wouldn’t want to move out but stay in UK - I’d only move out for a new experience, or stay here

Anyway, my manager is gonna contact me about other positions elsewhere (technically not unemployed, cos I wasn’t fired, the client just didn’t want me at that site anymore), but I don’t wanna stay in security

I have bad news to share. You won’t be able to teach English without a degree anymore. It was possible in the 2000s, lots of people did this. But nowadays they require you to have a degree. I can’t pull it off because they only hire white people. They make exceptions for Americans/Brits/Australians/Canadians POC.

I have a degree
I don’t have a TEFL certificate, which is required for China and some other places. Not required for Thailand but wages are shit
You can get bogstandard ones for pretty cheap, but it still requires a bit of time and money investment. I might still do it

To become a teacher in UK I believe you need to do a year long course that costs around £9000

I don’t really wanna teach long term

Yeah, that’s what I meant — you need a certificate to teach. Could be TEFL. What degree do you have, BTW? I’m not sure if you can get away with just any degree though. If a teaching certificate is necessary, then I would say go for it anyway. I would have tried teaching overseas if I wasn’t a brown dude from a non-English-speaking country.

Just one year?! It’s 4 years here, or 2,5 if you’re already a licensed teacher.

Any degree is accepted as long as you’re a native English speaker, and will be easier if you’re white

Idk about China earning potential, but in Thailand if u want the jobs that pay decently, u usually need an education degree or be a qualified teacher

Even the basic TEFL jobs in China usually pay at least £2000 a month tho

Ahh, gotcha. So they accept any degree then if you’re a native speaker. Go for it, dude. I would have given it a try if it was up to me. Or maybe I wouldn’t. But I’d be open to the idea. I can’t pull it off since I’m not a native speaker plus I’m brown. The white worship is so real over there, they will even hire white Europeans with subpar English just because they look like they are native speakers.

One year if u already have any degree
Damn, that’s awesome. Even if you have a degree, you need to go through a 4 year program anyway. You can get exemptions for some subjects if you already did something similar with an earlier bachelor’s, but you’d still be studying for like at least 2,5 years.

I think I’ll try and get an online TEFL certificate. A cheap one but not a ridiculously cheap one that looks pathetic. The gold standard is CELTA if u actually want knowledge or better opportunities, but that’s longer, more expensive, and not required for most TEFL jobs

Then once I have that imma try and get a job in China

It’s easy to get jobs in Thailand without TEFL, and as I said I’ve already been offered a science teacher job, but you’d be earning less than £1000 a month. The cost of living is low, but it’s still bad compared to China, or even Vietnam. So I won’t accept this offer, and will instead try and get to China, and can always apply for Thailand later if I wanted

My degree is in marine biology. Forgot to say

I’d hate to be teaching British teens tho

Once you are a qualified teacher, especially if u have some experience, u may be able to get jobs in international schools in Asia, where the salary is comparable to UK but COL is lower

Apparently some people earn around £3k a month in Thailand

You’ve already been offered a job? I must have missed that! That’s great. I would be really tempted to go, but ultimately, I’d decide against it because I don’t want to move away to a foreign country. Hopefully you get an offer from China, maybe you can contact schools and ask about it? Didn’t know you had a degree in marine biology, that’s nice. I don’t have any degree at all. But even when I do get mine eventually, I’ll just stick to teaching jobs in The Netherlands. Where in Thailand would you be, BTW? In Bangkok, another city or a rural area?

Yeah. As a qualified native English speaking teacher u could still probably save more living in Thailand tho

The job is in Bangkok. Salary is 42500 baht, which is £970 a month

The reasons I’ll likely turn it down are because 1) won’t save any money, so will break even for the year, 2) I’d rather wait and try and get TEFL qualified and get a job in China. I could always go to Bangkok and then look for China jobs, but I don’t feel like doing that, and 3) I have no teaching experience and don’t feel confident. Especially since it’s a science teacher, and not teaching English as a foreign language

That’s a pretty shitty pay to say the least. You would make more doing pizza deliveries. I would have turned it down as well. Don’t worry about having no teaching experience and not feeling confident. Pretty much every teacher feels that way. Especially the first five years. But yeah, science teachers are in demand. It’s easier to get a job even in the west. Language teachers are dealing with a lot of competition. Option two is your best bet. As you know, I’m studying to become an English teacher myself. ESL.

South Africans, right? Yeah, if you’re from one of those five countries you can get away with being non-white. I wasn’t entirely sure if SA was included.

Yes it's pretty easy to get a teaching degree here and if you got high or some what good enough grades in highschool it's free but I heard the pay is shit compared to here even though they have better economy

The pay is pretty good here in The Netherlands. But you can’t easily get one. You go through four years of schooling and simultaneously you’re doing internships every year. Half a year in the first year, entire year in the second year, and probably the same goes for the third year and the final year. I’m not complaining as it really prepares us for the job.
