Universities should be STEM only

And be more selective. There are way too many uni students for graduate entries. Most unis aren’t even good. Plus all the stupid useless degrees just to take your money.

There’s like only 10-15 unis worth going to in the uk for example @imontheloose
The other degrees are just sexparty for chads

One of the best uses of our taxes
Better than paying for welfare for asylum seekers, sending money to israel or lining the pockets of defense companies
i do agree with this, and i think cutting those funds are important

but taxes would be much better spent on
  • law enforcement (sent to states and bureaus),
  • funding of public projects (important buildings, infrastructure for roads, water, farms for food),
  • funding of education (i'd say focus more on 1st-12th grade education, limit funding for colleges to keep them competitive, since most colleges aren't giving as many jobs in the US)
  • cutting of current healthcare funds and programs, or spending to make them more cost efficient
  • rest can go into state funding + reducing state corruption
these are much more important then humanities in the US
Our problem in the uk is the opposite
Our minimum wage is quite good, but everything else is barely an upgrade. A full time graduate engineer earns about £30k/year. Someone stocking shelves in Tesco earns about £25k/year, see the issue?
Our problem is that we don’t pay our professionals enough. In america on the other hand the working class is barely surviving whilst professional careers earn 100s of thousands even with higher COL.
makes sense, idk anything about the uk

the wages seem like they have a very small difference though, i think in the uk I agree with you

in the US where i live though i disagree

define what gives a degree "a point"
in terms of the individual, to pursue their passion, the degree gives them credibility to others on it, so to most, a degree allows one to pursue their passions whilst also making money off of it (the severity of this split of money vs passion depends on the individual)

in terms of society, it represents the field one will put their energy into, so control over degrees and colleges is how a government can control the work output of a society

the question of the worth of a degree in humanities to universities is:

given all this funding, do people with humanities degrees pursue jobs in humanities, and also achieve it?

if so, then they have pursued their passion and university supported it, so on an individual level the university succeeded

otherwise it is a failure

For engineering I think Oxbridge, Imperial, UCL, bath, Bristol, Warwick, Southampton and Manchester are the ones only worth going ?

There’s maybe some that are better for some disciplines than others
Oxbridge, Imperial, Manchester, Southampton, that’s it for eng. Warwick is only good for maths n UCL r the bastard children

negro I am a student at a top 10 as well and I say FUCK YES

And bath too I think, they have A*A*A requirements so they seem pretty serious,

I think top 5 for mechanical

mayb 4 mechanical idk, i dont know much abt these guys. mech eng is a dying discipline. ppl fell for the meme. grade requirements mean nothing anyway, most unis will be A*AA or smt like that n they’ll let kids in who get way less than they should.

the first yr acts as a filter for these little retards. i didnt rlly experience this since ppl r spergs here but im well aware of other unis being like this..

How is the job market for EE here ? I’m assuming better than most other engineering disciplines except civil ?

Muh art muh humanities. This prison island is falling apart. Look at the infrastructure jfl
this country isnt going to boost its way back up to the former productive island it once was, n som fresher denying that wont change anything. humanities r good bc they r a human art n human creativity excels, but with the introduction of the tuition fee system, they became obsolete as it made uni a money scheme.

students no longer go to uni to learn, it is abt how to make money bc vry few want to pay tuition just to learn / be creative..

gud if ur in electrical power. at the end of the day, everything remaining here from industrial period now needs electricity n high voltage power distro. rest is cucked. semiconductors = no scaling n u will work in medical at best. ic design = suicide, we make no chips. comms = ok if u can somehow get into defence n become lieutenant n yeh gl w tha tbh..

prob moving to ee. process / chemical engs used to hv it pretty good, but the chinese now dominate the market domestically and internationally. i got laid off from a chemical plant which went bust for this vry reason n the chinese bought the plant lol..

There really needs to be some serious investment in this country before it’s too late.

Would you move to another country if you got a role there ?

yeh. siemens r gud company 4 this. u work in between uk n germany. germay is likely better, n all of continental europe is similarly electrical power dominated, so id not go starving. if ur any half decent, som1 will need a power guy. i dont see myself permanently leaving england, however..

Humanities is worthless, it only produces low IQ communists, socialists, homosexuals, gender studies feminists, and all the cancerous racial ideology we see today.

University should be stem and law only. No gay genderqueer studies courses.

The thing is, 90% of people that are taking humanity courses aren’t interested in staying at university and deepening their knowledge about us further, they are there just for the paper

despite humanities and extra research into art, culture etc, art and culture has been dying in our society (look at buildings)

we throw more funds into humanities for no difference in this, it's a waste of money and doesn't accomplish the goals you said it should

they use taxpayer money to fund their "fun" and "character development"

still, i think a seperate place should be held for humanities and the funds should be cut in about half
Universities should be for a intelectual elite only. That’s when we were thriving the most. Uni should be a place to advancing our knowledge, not a repository for young people

Most universities make the bulk of their money from international students who are charged insane amounts. Honestly even 10-15 is pushing it like imontheloose said, these days pretty much everyone has a degree. Most of the people working retail even have a degree although it likely won't be stem. Employers value experience over everything now. Maybe like 5 or 6 universities where they really stand out. Some of these kids going to literally who unis are wasting their time. There's too many grads and not enough jobs, I haven't seen any real solution to this problem except "increase tuition fees" so less people get a chance to go but I don't think that will work.

Our minimum wage has increased but so has everything else. Cost of living crisis never really went away, people often say they felt more comfortable on a 30k salary 5 years ago than them being on 55k now. 50k is the new 30k apparently. Yes professionals start off usually around the 30k mark but in 4 years time you'll be on much higher wages and they'll still be stuck on minimum wage

There is more to the world than stem and I say that as a stem student

Now imagine the people going to some 80th place uni studying engineering with a C in maths JFL. They will never work in the industry,

IMO I think if you can get a degree apprenticeship in engineering that’s usually better.

Our economic times mean you have to make some hard choices. You can’t just study what you want anymore
Exactly, you have to minmax everything so to speak. The right career, experience, top university, networking. It's become a huge hassle. Tech jobs got obliterated due to A.I and offshoring to the 3rd world. Medicine still seems like a safe choice imo

I hate how most people in my field think like you
That ones only purpose is to produce value, probably for some soulless defense company making machines to bomb children or the infrastructure to facilitate it
Most people are so scared of not being able to get their foot in the door for their field that they'll do anything to not end up working min wage dead end jobs like all the meme degrees

Most of them shouldnt exist at this point. Just shitty businesses that are churning people in and out for money. Biggest waste of my life was spending 3 years at university. The 3 years I spent on drugs were better used.

I went to uni about a decade ago now and I think about 20% of my class actually managed to get a job and progress their career. Everyone else works some shitty random job or they changed careers through some apprenticeship or whatever. My cousin in a different city said the same thing back then, there simply aren't enough jobs for grads baxk then and now it's gotten so much worse. All the medicalfags are doing just fine though

Medicine is pretty safe but it’s such a long route and for most of your career you’ll be vastly underpaid compared to other countries

America rewards ( or used to ) hard workers and ambitious people unlike the UK which rewards scroungers.

You didn’t even need to be very high IQ or educated to make a good living in America. I have distant family who are very successful in trades there too.

Although that’s dying as well sadly

Medicine, dentistry ect will always have jobs available but it’s a very long road and it won’t make you very rich compared to other countries which for the effort still isn’t worth it.

The problem is this country needs significant investment into STEM. Infrastructure is falling apart. Very little tech innovation. Even research is poor in this country.

Not sure where all the money the politicians promised has went

You’re a fucking goy if “muh economy” is your principal concern in life
Our biggest concern should be improving the infrastructure of the country ( roads, bridges, water, electricity ect); improving the healthcare system (NHS is falling apart); investing in technology and top of the line research for various issues.

Not poetry or theatre
