I'm married to a woman from South Korea and have also lived there myself for a while. I can tell you with confidence that Switzerland has a pretty collectivist culture, not unlike Japan or Korea. Many Americans (as well as many Europeans) think of Switzerland as an extremely libertarian and therefore extremely individualistic country. This is largely true in regard to our politics but not in regard to our culture.

One of the first things my wife asked me when she moved to Switzerland was: "Why does everyone dress the same here??" And it's true; a lot of tourists and foreigners notice this. Simply put, the three accepted colors of clothing in Switzerland are brown, grey and black (and a bit of white). There's a tacit agreement that everyone will and should stick to this rule, as well as to the types of clothes that are considered normal. If you don't stick to these unspoken rules, people will respect you less. You can tell this from the types of comments they make. The comments are usually dressed up as light-hearted teasing but if you know the culture, you can tell people secretly look down on you. For example I used to wear a tie-dye hoody that I bought in the US (sadly lost it a few years ago). Both tie-dye and adults who wear hoodies are considered unacceptable in Switzerland. Consequently, I had to deal with a lot of condescending teasing.

America is very different in this way. In the US, people tend to say: "Ha, I like that guy! He's so different!" Americans view diversity and quirkiness as positive things. This attitude is particularly strong in the big cities. If a New Yorker sees a granny on the subway who suddenly begins to sing, he will barely raise an eyebrow. He might think: "She's funny" or "okay, interesting". What he won't think, however, is: "This is very uncomfortable and inappropriate, why can't she sit down and quietly browse through a magazine??"

If America's overall culture is that of a big city, Switzerland's general culture is that of a small village. This includes A LOT of social pressure to fit in and not stand out in any way. After all, you don't want the neighbors to spread rumors over the garden fence!

Another good example for this cultural difference is Donald Trump. Leaving his politics aside, I think it's fair to say that Trump is a very unique and quirky person. He's loud, flashy, dramatic, comical, crazy. But this is exactly why he was elected President. Americans love people like him. Even progressives who vehemently oppose his politics admit that his craziness is a big part of his charme. Nobody in the US likes Martin O'Malley style politicians. And if you don't remember who Martin O'Malley is - that's exactly my point.

In Switzerland, this is very different. Trump would've never been elected here. Even if people liked his politics, they would be shocked, outraged, annoyed, offended by his unique style. They would think: "Why can't he be calm, polite, comb his hair and wear a suit?" Not because Swiss people love boring people but rather because they love "normal" people. Trump stands out of the mass and standing out of the mass is considered a really, really negative thing in Switzerland. It is viewed as uncouth, rude and immature.

I could give you thousands of examples for this but here's just one more from the top of my mind. Most Swiss people like silence and it's generally considered polite to not make too much noise (similar to Japan). If you're on the train, it is oftentimes very quiet. If people do talk, they do this half-whisper thing. Now, if the train (or bus, tram etc.) stops at a station and new passengers get on, those new people might be in a very different mood. Sometimes you can hear them talk loudly and laugh outside on the platform when the door opens. But the very moment they step onto the train and enter the passenger section, they dramatically lower their voice or become totally silent. It's always fun to observe this; it's almost like someone turned down the volume. The reason they get quiet is because they feel the mood of the passengers who are already on the train. This is the quintessence of collectivism. They don't even need to be reminded to be quiet with written signs. All they need is the "vibe" of the group and they will immediately adjust. This behavior is very typical in other contexts, too. Swiss people always adjust to the vibe of the group and what's considered normal/appropriate. We are the ultimate herd animals. By contrast, I have been on the train with American tourists could kept half-shouting at each other and laughing extremely loudly even though everyone else was silent. For a Swiss person, this would be unbearable but they didn't even seem to notice the stares, let alone be bothered by their own lack of fitting in.

I think Americans have more of a live-and-let-live attitude where everyone just sort of does what he wants and doesn't care too much about what others might think or feel about it. If you're not happy with someone's behavior, you need to actively talk to that person. But in Switzerland, all it takes is a stare and people will hurry to adjust their behavior.
