I'm about to binge on movies about the Vietnam war. I'm kind of obsessed with that theme. Once every year, around Springtime, I spend a couple weeks soaking up anything I can about Vietnam. This includes a lot documentaries/war films. It's my only "autistic" vice.

My three all time favorite films from this genre, from least to greatest, are.......

Hamburger Hill
Hamburger hill31054

The Casualties of War
Casualties of war 556b58a710aa4

Apocalypse Now
P 800x1200 ApocalypseNow En 022916

What are your favorite Vietnam war films? And please, if you know of any good documentaries on the subject be sure to let me know.

Tropic Thunder... it's not a very educational movie but the parody-within-a-parody element is very funny.

would have been heroic fighting with your bros to the sound of hueys
I just like the idea of stomping through the jungles always living on the razor's edge. Always being alert. Must have been one hell of a rush. Being a tunnel rat would have been something. My uncle was in that war. Had to go down and clear out a tunnel one time. Said it was by far the most nerve racking thing he's ever done in his life.

I could have. But the Air Force got to me first. After I got kicked out my dad tried convincing me to immediately join the Marines. I'd just spent 9 months in the military though and wasn't wanting any more of it. I was too young and stupid. All I wanted at the time was to be a civilian so I could smoke pot.

I'm not so drawn to the desert. I love jungles. The war in Iraq was also too high tech. Plus, I'm sure Bagdad brothels got nothing on the ones in old Saigon. Vietnam would have been great. The atmosphere of it is so aesthetic. Fighting a war out in the open desert, or in urban slums, wouldn't be as beautiful as Vietnam. I love the idea of hiking through the jungles of Vietnam with a platoon for weeks at a time and then, all of a sudden, BOOM! Contact.

Imagine being a Green Beret in Vietnam during the 60s just having the time of your life with your mates, and then coming back from deployment to fuck liberal hippy chicks exploring their newfound sexual freedoms.

It doesn't work like that. You don't just get to choose where you end up.
