In my country(and in many other European country as well) it's not uncommon to call people animals or give them such nicknames, either affectionately or as admiration or an insult. One guy is tall for example and he's called a giraffe, another one that's fat can be called bear, boar, pig, etc. a short guy can be nicknamed hamster or something similar, etc.
