This info is plagiarised from Leo and Longevity. You can watch the video format here. This thread will include diagrams and protocols, unlike in the video.
F0: F0 (fundamental frequency) refers to the lowest frequency of vibration of the vocal cords, determining the pitch of someone's voice. This is measured in Hz (hertz). It represents perceived pitch. The higher the Hz, the higher the pitch.
In men f0 ranges from 80 to 180 whereas in women, 165-225. The ideal f0 for a man in terms of attracting women falls at 97 hz.
An example of a voice which is around 97 hz (see here).
Anatomy
The voice is mainly produced by 3 systems,
the vocal folds:
These three systems largely produce the voice.
When air exits the respiratory system, it goes up until it meets the vocal folds. If it's powerful enough, it will open the vocal folds via something called subglottal pressure. Once this process happens, the vocal folds rapidly close up again. This produces our primary sound at a certain frequency which is determined by our cyclic oscillations of the vocal folds. This primary sound is also referred to as the voice source. The end voice is determined by our manipulation of the vocal tracts.
Puberty
During puberty, sex hormones cause the elongation of the vocal tract, the enlargement of the larynx and the enlargement of the vocal folds. In men, this causes a secondary descent of the larynx, causing more dramatic effects in puberty than women. The major anatomical difference between men and women lies in the vocal fold length which averages 60% higher in men. The vocal tract length is around 20% higher in men than women:
Post Puberty
At around the age of 20, the laryngal cartilages begin to ossify (collagenous tissue solidifying via turning into bone). This prevents further growth. Before this ossification occurs, the actual anatomical structure of the vocal tract and cartilage tissue has the capability of really changing and increasing in size which can cause permanent changes in the way our voices sound.
In adulthood, what changes most significantly is that muscular tissue can experience hyperplasia, hypertrophy or the vocal folds can atrophy.
If you are below the age of 25, experience with androgens and estrogens can have a permanent impact on the way you sound by changing your voice systems. Changes can also happen in terms of vibrating mass due to large amounts of growth from hyperplasia and hypertrophy in the muscle and other tissue however these may be less significant due to atrophy from stopping steroids, keep in mind, the changes later on won't be as significant as those you get before the age of 25 which is why some under go voice surgery.
Hormones
In males there are androgen receptors both in the cytoplasm and nucleus of vocal fold cells. Agonism of the androgen receptors in the vocal folds causes their hypertrophy and hyperplasia in puberty (another reason to take hormones as a teen). Testosterone, SARM's, Androstanalone are all good options. A hypothetical stack could be something like 500 test a week alongside a strong ai to prevent the ossification of the vocal tract.
How Voice Matters
1. When f0 deepens in men, it reliably indicates puberty (similar to how menstruation indicates puberty in foids).
2. Mens vocal and facial masculinity are correlated which indicates they are governed by a similar process (androgen signalling). This is made clear by the fact that pitch is negatively associated with androgen levels in men (higher androgen levels means a decline in pitch).
3. Mens 2d to 4d ratio isn't correlated with f0 which means that f0 is mainly impacted by androgens outside of the womb. (environment, and hormones in later life has a greater impact than hormones inside the womb).
4. For several of the reasons listed above, voice is an honest indicator to both woman and men of your androgen levels.
Vocal Exercise
When it comes to this, the female to male's (ftm's) are your best friend unfortunately. They are able to achieve impressive results with vocal exercises. Male to female transexuals experience an opening of their glottal space, independent of their hormone 'therapy' which indicates an anatomical change, just from vocal exercises. In summary, vocal exercises, over a certain period will cause anatomical changes. Ftm's are able to lower their f0 to 105hz-110hz which is near perfect for attracting females (ideal being 97hz). This means women are getting near ideal f0, a great indicator for us that these methods work.
I will leave you guys with some videos which will certainly help further masculinise your voices.
Cigarettes
Cigarette smoking can cause what is known as 'Reinke's edema' which is an adema of the vocal folds with benign lesions. In Reinke's adema, the vocal system develops inflammation, epithelial hyperplasia, and fibrotic developments. This adema can occur very rapidly after cigarette smoke. About 15 cigarettes a day, for 20 days, caused this adema of the vocal folds. The raspy voices associated with smoking are usually a result of Reinke's adema.
Protocol
Step 1
Measure your f0 using this link (see here). Simply press 'start pitch detection' and say the vowel e for about 10 seconds and note the Hz on screen.
Step 2
Follow a hormone protocol which is relatively androgenic (I wont give a clear stack but I mentioned compounds above which may be useful).
Step 3
Commit about 10-15 minutes a day to voice exercises
Step 4
Progressively overload cigarettes from 5 to 10 a day
Step 5
Monitor your voice progress using the website every week until you have reached your desired f0.
Note:
Of course only follow the steps you are comfortable with and remember this is't medical advice.
