The average viking/raider/barbarian/etc throughout history wasn't anything like Cannon the Barbarian or whatever bullshit you see on TV. Most of them were basically just social rejects that failed to get a wife at home and so were left with no choice but to pillage foreign lands to obtain one. That, or they were trash peasants conscripted by their lord to die in some bullshit war they didn't even care about.
In most nations historically, being a soldier was a low-status job that held little prestige, even for the higher ranking ones such as captains or even generals sometimes. The real chads were athletes and artists who stayed at home.
