A friend and I were walking after having left a store for some drinks. As we were walking, a lady stops us and starts speaking in Spanish. I, not speaking the language, keep walking, but my friend stays since she does speak Spanish. The lady proceeds to tell my friend that she lost her hand in an (unspecified) accident, that she lost her family, and that she's both without a job and home now. She asks my friend if we can spare a dollar or anything we can afford to give because anything would help etc. You know, the typical beggar script.
Now, this is where my role in this comes in. My friend didn't have money because I was the one who paid. She calls me over (I was only a little ways ahead) and asks me if I have a dollar because the lady needs it. I say I don't and my friend proceeds to give me a looks of disbelief because she KNOWS I have change to spare, I simply didn't want to. She then faces the beggar lady and tells her that she's sorry but we don't have money.
As me and my friend were walking together again, she asks what my problem is and why didn't I give her even just a dollar. She explains to me what the lady had told her and I replied that a dollar wouldn't take someone in her position far. My friend kept moralfagging out saying that a dollar might've taken her a long way, could've gotten her water, a bus, etc. I, trying to keep it realistic, asked her if she really thought a dollar would've done fuckall for that lady but she said that it didn't matter what she thought because the lady was clearly in need. I scoffed a little and said that she was probably saving for meth anyway. My friend then asks me how I can be so heartless and that she thought better of me etc.
I became annoyed by her moralfagging and said that the lady should probably just kill herself anyway because it was over without a family, hand, job or house. She didn't argue back after that but she did call me "so fucking evil."
What would you all have done? I could've probably just not said anything and it would've been fine for the most part but I hadn't initially realized how much it bothered her when I didn't give the lady money in spite of having it.
Sorry in advance for any clunky writing/grammar. I just got home and I typed this out rather quickly
