Went to the cinema with my friend today to watch obsession.
Genuinely movie of the year, it was not horror as in ghosts, it was a psychological horror movie.
It had me fucking ducking under the seats like a scared kitten, great plot, even better ending.
All that under 1 million dollars btw.
THE STORY
Bear works at a music store and has been in love with his friend Nikki for years. He never tells her how he feels because he's scared of being rejected. Nikki treats him like a close friend, but Bear wants more.
One day he buys a magical item called a One Wish Willow. Instead of giving it away, he breaks it and wishes that Nikki would love him more than anyone else in the world. The wish immediately comes true.
At first everything seems perfect. Nikki suddenly becomes affectionate, stays with him constantly, and starts a relationship with him. Bear gets exactly what he always wanted.
But strange things begin happening. Nikki occasionally snaps out of her loving behavior for a few seconds. She looks terrified, confused, and asks what is happening to her before suddenly becoming obsessed with Bear again.
As time passes, Nikki's behavior gets worse. She watches Bear while he sleeps, becomes jealous of anyone who talks to him, and tries to stop him from leaving the house. Bear starts realizing something is very wrong.
The movie slowly reveals that the real Nikki is trapped somewhere. The person walking around is basically a cursed version of Nikki created by the wish. The real Nikki occasionally breaks through and tries to warn Bear. At one point she screams "It's not me."
Bear contacts the company behind the One Wish Willow and learns there are only two ways to stop the curse: use another person's wish to undo it or die. He desperately searches for a solution.
Meanwhile Bear's friends Ian and Sarah notice that Nikki is acting strangely. Sarah becomes especially important because she genuinely cares about Bear and seems like a healthier match for him than Nikki.
Nikki's obsession becomes violent. She kills Bear's cat, cooks it, and secretly feeds it to him in a lunch she made. This is one of the moments where Bear fully realizes how dangerous the situation has become.
Bear asks Ian to use a One Wish Willow to help undo the curse. Ian doesn't believe him and jokingly wishes for a billion dollars. The wish actually works and money starts appearing, proving the magic is real.
Soon after, Nikki shoots Ian and kills him.
Sarah gets closer to Bear, and Nikki sees her as a threat. Nikki attacks Sarah, smashes her with a brick, and kills her. Afterward she keeps Sarah's body around and even tries to imitate her appearance because she thinks that will make Bear love her more.
By this point Bear understands that everything happening is his fault because he made the wish. He can no longer find any way to save Nikki.
In the final act, Bear decides the only way to end the curse is to die. He takes a large amount of pills. Almost immediately he regrets it and tries to throw them up.
While he's doing that, Nikki finds a One Wish Willow of her own. She wishes that Bear would love her as much as she loves him. The wish works instantly. Bear suddenly stops trying to save himself and walks to Nikki. For the first time in the movie, both of them are equally obsessed with each other.
They embrace and kiss.
Then the pills kill Bear.
The moment Bear dies, his original wish is broken. The cursed version of Nikki disappears and the real Nikki returns. She suddenly wakes up and finds herself surrounded by the bodies of Bear, Ian, and Sarah. She realizes something terrible happened while she was trapped.
The final scene is Nikki screaming in horror as she looks around the room. The movie ends without showing what happens next.
The biggest twist is that Bear never actually got to know whether the real Nikki loved him back. If he had simply told her how he felt at the beginning, none of the tragedy would have happened.
