We are willingly blind to the reality of movies?

Something that ive never really understood is how do we as humans get lost in movies and acting performances as if they are real? Like we literally see the actors out of role doing promotional interviews, being cast in different movies with different roles. Yet in the moment, we believe the facade. We get immersed in it. We get emotional about it.

Its because actors have better faces than the general population. Even the normal looking actors have faces that you would remember if you came across them.

We are able to believe the facade because our brains are hardwired for empathy and storytelling, not for logical detachment.

suspension of disbelief

your brain treats the world in that film/show as the relevant reality

you arent consciously calculating an actors shaky breath, cracky voice, and teary eyes when watching

you just recognize the sadness

hate to be that guy but not everything is about looks

if you mean the their ability to make expressions sure

a lot of ugly actors that resonate with audiences still though

I mean better in the sense of being unique. Al Pacino has a face that you will remember even though there are clones of him who even with the slightest change look different. Faces that deviate from the normal grab the eye and stick in the mind. Most importantly having expressive eyes is much more important, which is why you wont see good actors with very deep set eyes

do you think because of how the human brain has adapted evolutionary for empathetic behaviours, so we identify with the actors emotions first and foremost

Im asking more about the believability and immersion of tv and films, not the memorability of faces or actors

yeah thats why acting works so well

i think theres different types of empathies to experience in films/shows

in a situation where characters are in immediate danger, your brain simulates what theyre going through

you infer everything theyre going through in that moment

im forgetting the terms but theres a difference between "i understand this character is horrified" vs "watching this horrified character makes me feel something resembling their fear"

i dont think its that narrow though

Thats just escapism. Most people lead boring lives at best so they imagine stories where shit actually happens. Movies and TV are just a way to outsource that imagination. Same way reading out loud a novel like a recitation would make you cringe but nobody reads lile that. Most people read in their minds and use it to give faces, voices and characteristics to the characters. Movies just outsource that

i dont think the reason why people gravitate towards media is the question

its the psychology on why seeing a character go through the motions of life makes us feel similar things as the character we are watching

and how we believe whats infront of us, while still knowing in the back of our mind that its fictitious
