I understand where you are coming from, but it is essentially colonization just without the name, just like you suggested Cambodia was a protectorate of France in 1863. The King during that time King Norodom, signed a treaty with France to ensure safety for the country from its neighbors Siam and Youn (aka Thai and Vietnam, atleast that's what they're called in my home country), in the past The Khmer Empire (Cambodia) was even bigger than the Byzantine Empire stretching from current Cambodia, Laos, Thai, Vietnam and even some parts of China. Until inevitably, under shaky and incompetent ruling, The Khmer Empire lost major land and assets to the Siams and Youn which makes it understandable why King Norodom wanted protection from the French which was a notoriously powerful country like the Japanese, English etc., during the 19th century. In doing so, even under monarchy, the ones that were controlling everyone and everything including the King was the French. By definition the French were colonizing Cambodia, they had higher the taxes and used Cambodians in wars for there own benefits and used the natural resources for trades and selfish desires.
